Greetings Clients!
I am wishing you all a most festive Autumn! There's a nip in the air and the smell of falling leaves. Not as vibrantly strong or colorful as it is on the eastcoast, where I'm from (GO STEELERS!), but still quite lovely.
I apologize that it's been so long since the last newsletter. It's always harder to motivate myself to sit at a computer when I could be playing outside! But it's long overdue so let's begin! First of all I want to welcome the many new clients that have joined Bend Skin CO. This past June, I did a Facial/Massage special with Jennifer Bogle, the wonderful Massage Therapist in my office which was a HUGE success! In August, I mailed out another special, this one for the "Le Grande Classique" Facial and if you are still interested in taking advantage of this offer, please let me know. Normally $100.00, for a limited time, it is $80.00. So call and schedule it today! 541-390-3338. I want you to know that I appreciate the loyalty from all of my clients and your dedication to your skin care at this time. From a financial stand point, times certainly are tough right now but the quality and care you give your skin is priceless!
So let's talk about some skin care tips for autumn. Taking a walk through Shevlin Park or hiking around Paulina Lake this time of year is such a great experience, but there's nothing picturesque about chapped lips or wind-burned skin. It's even more important to care for your skin during the change of seasons, when the varying weather conditions and changing temperatures sneak in and damage your skin before you've adjusted your skin care routine. As the temperatures drop, that new chill in the air can surprise and chap your skin. The heat in your house is starting to come on, drying your skin even more. Can you say HYDRATE????????
* Switch to a heavier moisturizer or add a specific nighttime product if you aren't already using one. YonKa's "Optimizer Creme" is wonderful for day and the Phyto 58 really nourishes and repairs your skin while you sleep. Love your current moisturizer? Then add one of YonKa's Dermal serums to your product. Another incredible delight for your skin is the Mesonium #1 & #2 which is applied directly to the skin and will leave it gloriously silky!
* Don't forget to maintain your daily water intake and eat foods rich in essential fatty acids. That's moisturizing from the inside out!
* Keep your lips covered (and kissable) with balm or lipstick. YonKa's LeBaum Lip contains nourishing butters and oils and can be used alone or under any lip color.
* Remember your SPF protection! Just because the weather is cooler, the sun will still have damaging effects.
* Exfoliate! The YonKa Gommage 303 (normal to oily) & 305 (normal to dry) are just the thing to remove those dead skin cells that cling to the skin without the harshness of a scrub that may damage your skin.
* Mask! Nothing leaves your skin feeling as soft and supple as a good mask. For optimal hydration, use YonKa's Masque N#1. Here's a few celebs that use it: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hilary Swank, Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba and Madonna. And speaking of celebrity endorsements.............Here are the guys using the YonKa for Men Skin Care Line: Matthew Mcconaughey, George Michael, Johnny Depp and Michael Douglas. With all they put their skin through with make-up, etc, YonKa has become the product of choice for these guys. And who knows...maybe using YonKa for Men will transform the body as well! (Girls--if your guy starts looking like Matthew Mcconaughey after using these products, please let me know so I can enhance the perfection of my own Prince Eric!)
There are a few specials coming up for the Holidays that I want to share with you. The "Golden Fantasy" which features Masque N#1, Elastine Jour and a natural Jasmine candle, The "Silver Fantasy" featuring Creme 83 and Phyto Contour along with a beautiful Crystal Key Chain and lastly, The "Men's Surprise Set" featuring Age-Defense Moisturizer, Foam Scrub and a Key Fob. These gift packages will save you 20% off the regular price of the products included in each. The Key Chain and Fob are truly "Haute Couture" and are designed by a very promising young French Designer, a graduate of the notable National School of the Fine Arts in France. I will have the Gift Packages soon for you to see and will be taking orders for these delightful additions to anyone's gift list!
Ladies, did you know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month? Please remember to schedule your mammogram if it's been a year or more since your last exam. I'm stressing the importance of this from 2 experiences. This past June, one of my dearest clients was diagnosed with breast cancer through mammography. It resulted in an extremely frightening and painful experience for her (and her family) and ended with a double mastectomy. I am overjoyed to tell you that she is doing beautifully and I am totally in awe of her strength. Personally, I recently went through the scare of a questionable mammogram and biopsy. The good news is, no cancer. (YEEHAW!) However, without early detection these cells could have become cancerous. So please take this seriously and take care of youself. And to all of my male clients, make sure the women you love, Wife, Girlfriend, Mom, Sister, etc. are getting regular mammograms. Be discreet! You don't neccessarily want to discuss it at Mom's house during Sunday dinner. But the fact that you care enough to ask will let her know how much she means to you.
Are you tired of your boring old bikini or brazilian wax? Why not show your playful side and try one of the new "Beekini" shapers? These are actually stencils that are used to create shapes! I have the star, arrow, butterfly, lips, heart or lightening bolt. It won't make the waxing itself anymore enjoyable, but the end result is kind of cool!
A few new treatments have been added to the menu and you can see all of the services on the website, www.bendskinco.com There are also some price increases that will take effect November 1st, so please check out the website. I will be adding a few new services to the treatment menu before the end of the year. The first will be the latest beauty trend, Eye Lash Extensions. These are lashes placed on your individual lashes with an adhesive to give your eyes a total "WOW" look. It's totaly painless and you'll be amazed at the transformation. The initial visit takes approximately 2 hours, depending on how much we're adding. The follow up appointments take about 45-60 minutes for "fills".
I'd like to take an opportunity now just to remind you of my committment and promise to provide you with the most effective, successful and safest treatments available. I want you to know that I am consistantly seeking continuing education by way of classes through YonKa and other institutions, online 'webinars', in-house demonstration, video classes, reviewing trade journals and networking with other aestheticians. Advances in technology, different chemical formulations and new procedures are a constant. I seek as much education as time allows because the health of your skin is my success.
Last year on the day after Thanksgiving, Bend Skin CO. held it's own little "BLACK FRIDAY". It was incredibly successful and I plan to repeat it this year. So here's the deal: Between 9-10 AM, all products and services will be offered at 30% off. Between 10-11, 20% and between 11-12, 10%. Obviously the early bird catches the worm. "It's Rainin' Men--Hallelujah....."...and more
I'm reminded of that disco song from the early 80's by the WeatherGirls to begin this newsletter. And yes, I was a fairly decent disco queen in those days, in case you were wondering. Now that you have that little visual, let's get down to the business of skin, shall we?
YonKa has just launched their exclusive Men's Line of facial products, skin care regiment and specialized treatment facials. Since men's skin is generally more dense than a woman's it's especially important to treat it differently than normal protocol. This is exciting not only for my gentlemen clients but also for you ladies who want the men in your life to maintain healthy and youthful skin. And gone are the days when men viewed facial treatments as something "foofy" in which only ladies indulged. Good skin care has nothing to do with gender. And as much as I dislike the term "Metro-Sexual", it truly applies in this situation.
The two components of healthy skin are the Treatment Facials (that's my part) and the home care (that's the guy's part). There are three specific facials, in which I have received new training:
1. "Skin Fitness" which is a deeply cleansing facial. This is a great facial for teenage guys or really any guy with acne problems.
2. "Power Moist" which is restorative and addresses the first signs of aging.
3. "Age-Defense" which is firming and energizing.
The Product line is designed to purify, restore and rejuvenate. And good news guys, no girly scents with these products! As with all of YonKa's products it's just wonderfully aromatic botanicals.
The product line is quite simple. There are only 8 products:
1. Foam Gel Cleanser 2. Barber Shave 3. Foam Scrub 4. Mask 5. Lotion YK (a toner) 6. Age-Defense Moisturizer 7. Nutri-Moist Moisturizer and 8. Under Eye Gel.
So ladies, give him a nudge, a hint or simply deliver him to me for one of these fabulous Men's Facials. Here's a little extra incentive: If your guy, boyfriend, husband, son or Dad comes in for an appointment, I am offering you a complimentary Eye and Lip treatment for valued at $30.00 to say thanks. And if he's anything like my husband and son, he'll add skincare to the budget for both of you! And remember, Father's Day is coming up June 15! What a great idea!
For more information on the new Men's Line, please go to www.yonkaformen.com.

So here we are moving towards spring. And it's not too early to start thinking about Mother's Day. This year it is Sunday, May 11. Did you know that Mother's Day--or a version of it-- is celebrated, on different days throughout the year, by 133 countries around the world? 61 countries celebrate the holiday on the same day as the United States. Mother's Day in the U.S.A. is modeled loosely on a similar holiday in Britain. However, when it was imported by social activist Julia Ward Howe, after the Civil War, it was intended as a call to unite women against the war. Some of the early Mother's Day activities were meetings of mother's whose sons had fought or died on opposite sides of the Civil War. In 1870, Ms. Howe wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament, but she failed in her attempt to get formal recognition of a 'Mother's Day for Peace'. In 1905, a woman named Anna Marie Jarvis began to devote her life to establishing Mother's Day as a national and international holiday in honor of her own mother. So thanks Julia and Anna Marie! You're my kind of gals! And here's somthing interesting. In 2007, consumers spent an average of $140 each on Mother's Day. That adds up to almost $16 billion in total. And the amount spent for personal services, such as trips to the Spa? Almost $3 billion! So, in case you weren't reading between the lines.....come in and pick up a gift certificate or some luscious skin care products for your Mom! If my own queen, Mrs. Norma Taylor didn't live in Arkansas, she'd be getting weekly facials! And then come Father's Day, don't forget the new Men's Skin Care line. Hmmmm, I wonder if that would be a way to entice my dad into a visit? Stay tuned, I'll let you know!

And now a word or two about waxing. I'm seeing more and more clients, women as well as men, for whom waxing is simply a must-do part of their lives. But I can't stress strongly enough that proper home care after waxing is essential. Here are the three steps you need to do for the best results when waxing areas that are prone to ingrown hairs:
1. Immediately after waxing we need to diminish redness and irritation. I use YonKa's Creme 11 in-spa and encourage you to purchase this product for home use. A second choice is a pure aloe vera-based product.
2. Manually exfoliate the area daily in the shower. Besides lifting off dead skin cells, it loosens the hair follicle, preventing ingrowns and helping to alleviate the discomfort of waxing the next time around.
3. Once a day, apply a bump-preventing product that cools and heals. I carry a product called "Get the Bump Outta Here" which many clients love. What we're trying to accomplish is just one more way to exfoliate the skin between waxes.
The areas most prone to ingrowns are bikini, brazilian, underarms and backs.
4. Scheduling your appointments every 3-4 weeks depending on your hair growth rate is a must. It's very important for the hair folicle itself for waxing to occur when the hair is a little less than 1/4 inch. Waxing longer hair can be more traumatic on the skin.
